What it’s about
Nicola Cavendish stars as Vera in this touching, vividly rendered story about a sprightly 91-year-old New Yorker and her 21-year-old grandson, Leo, who has just cycled across the country. When Leo shows up unannounced on Vera’s doorstep with a bike, no money and nowhere to go, these unlikely roommates stop squabbling and, with humour and compassion, help each other navigate their changing worlds.
Why you’ll want to see it
Feeling like you need a good laugh? Well, they come non-stop in 4000 Miles as the supremely talented Nicola Cavendish returns to the Evergreen stage as Vera, the wise and hilarious matriarch of this poignant comedy. In the original Broadway run, the New York Times raves it’s an “altogether wonderful drama… illuminates how companionship can make life meaningful.”
What you’ll take away
You’ll laugh and you’ll cry at line after line of memorable dialogue between Nicola Cavendish’s Vera and Nathan Barret’s Leo, with a twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
“Cavendish is flawless…a must see for theatregoers of any generation”—Erika Thorkelson, The Vancouver Sun
“Worth going miles to see Cavendish light up the stage” – The Province
“Heartwarming, darkly funny and a fantastic vehicle for Nicola Cavendish”—Jo Ledingham, The Vancouver Courier
“A very immersive theatre experience”—Tessa Perkins, The Peak
“This was a fabulous performance. We absolutely loved Nicola’s portrayal of what we shall all become…wise, though old! Many smiles and tears and nods of agreement as we lived with her on your stage! We shall recommend this play to everyone we meet…and I would be remiss by not acknowledging the acting abilities of Nathan…what a sweetie! He was so patient with his grandma and showed us all how to respect our elders…in such a Nathan way. This was one of our faves after many, many years of enjoying the Stanley Theatre. Thank you all…” —Lori, Surrey
“Great performance. Glad to see Nicola back. A warming story about maturing and getting old. Bravo to the cast.” —Wayne, Vancouver
“4000 Miles is thoughtfully funny. There were many scenes that my husband and I could relate to because the characters reminded us of our parents, children, and often ourselves.” —Judy
