THE CENTURIONS PROJECT brings Sally Stubbs’ play Centurions to life in a collaborative process involving youth and professional artist-mentors. Centurions is an un-sanitized exploration of complex human issues related to friendship, love, sexual violence, silence and our escalating relationship with technology. A critical component of the project is the prompting of discussion about these issues.
CENTURIONS, THE SCRIPT: 18 year old Mark is held in a police station and interrogated about a violent crime. He holds his story close, but his secrets are unearthed and illuminated for the audience via his memories, imagination and films. It becomes clear that the crime he’s accused of committing is intertwined with another violent act – a rape – and his obsession with making films. Digital video production, live feed and pre-recorded, are integral to the premise, conflict, and mystery at the heart of Centurions.
RUN TIME: 80 MINUTES. No intermission. Suggested age: 14+
Live music by Scalawag each night at 6pm.
Wednesday – There will be reception post performance.
Thursday – There will be a 15 minute talk back post performance.

Centurions is a creeper. It has stayed with me ever since hearing a reading. It is a powerful and brave piece.’ Rebecca Burton, Playwrights Guild of Canada
‘Despite its sinister undertones, what’s compelling about Mark’s interrogation … is his endearing fragility – even his memories are mediated through cameras and commercial fantasies. In the end, solving the crime is less important to us than seeing Mark live fully in the material world around him.’ Sean Johnston, Editor, Ryga, A Journal of Provocations (excerpt of early draft of Centurions published in RYGA)
‘Where and when can I bring my students to see Centurions? This powerful and important work is a must-see. It would have my students riveted to their seats, with plenty to talk about afterwards!’ Leslie Stark, teacher, Delta, BC
‘… (Sally) wrote Centurions as her MFA thesis. It was a thrilling process, watching this script come to life. … I am pleased that this project centers around a play that I know will resonate profoundly with young people. We need more plays that do that.’ (Joan MacLeod, playwright/MFA Supervisor, Writing, UVic)
‘Centurions offers a compelling story and riveting characters. Stubbs enlists her trademark gothic flare to bring a chilling tale to life.’ Heidi Taylor, AED, Playwrights Theatre Centre
