Ballet Victoria’s The Gift is a 21st century updated family tradition with everything you expect from a ballet production. An original Christmas tale danced to the timeless score of the Nutcracker with humorous pantomime, beautiful costumes, magic and as always, surprises for the whole family. The Nutcracker is a Christmas classic that the whole family can enjoy. The Nutcracker dates back to 1892 at the Mariinksy theatre in Saint Petersburg. Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score, it has become a world-renowned holiday classic. The traditional ballet takes a trip to the ‘Land of Sweets’ where each sweet is represented by a different country around the world. The Nutcracker is still being performed seasonally by many ballet companies and continues to adapt to the modern world.

Ballet Victoria would like to acknowledge that our dance studio, office and performance venues are located on the unceded Coast Salish territory of the Lkwungen (Esquimalt and Songhees) peoples. Ballet Victoria acknowledges and thanks the Lkwungen People for allowing us to live, work and play on their lands. We also give thanks to the ancestors, supernatural ones, hereditary leaders and matriarchs, creatures big and small for looking after the rich resources and cultural teachings of this beautiful land. We acknowledge our traditional hosts and honour their welcome and graciousness to the artists who share their artform here. 

Founded in 2002, Ballet Victoria is a boutique professional ballet company with 12 dancers and four yearly productions. Our performances are dramatic, technically demanding, and often laced with humour. 

Our productions are accessible and relevant to a wide range of multi-cultural audiences. The shows are entertaining, hold great artistic depth and satisfy both those who discover ballet and the expert aficionado. 

With the direction of Paul Destrooper, innovation is happening, quietly but insistently. Music inspires bodies to create beauty and harmony in dance. 

Having produced close to one hundred new works, including 10 full length ballets, and toured in Canada, the USA and Mexico, Ballet Victoria’s artistic team is constantly exploring new territory. 
 Music creates an uncompromising range of choreographies, from Baroque music to Rock, from Opera to folk songs. The result: pure magic. The experience: fascinating. The memories: pure delight.
