The Marko Paolo Trio was formed by three principal players from the Vancouver Island Symphony; Paolo Bortolussi on flute, Mark Beaty on double bass, and Calvin Dyck on violin. This trio of talent brings together the varied experiences and talents of these exceptional musicians, creating an eclectic program of tangos, Irish folk music, and classical standards.
CALVIN DYCK’s hidden talent is his background on the accordion – which is especially effective in the tango repertoire. One day a travelling salesman sold the family an accordion and so started Calvin’s music career!
PAOLO BORTOLUSSI grew up on the east coast of Canada, and was constantly exposed to the Celtic tradition. He has an uncanny ability to transform his flute technique so that it sounds like an ancient wooden Irish flute with a rich reedy tone.
MARK BEATY developed a fascination with the music of Latin America in high school and subsequently spent a year studying the bass in Cuba where he honed his skills in the Latin music traditions.
