Viola Desmond: The Soundtrack of a Life

Musical TheatreWorks | by Tracey Power & Krystle Dos Santos

September 26 – 30, 2023 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

Hey Viola! is a musical exploration of Canadian Civil Rights hero, Viola Desmond. But who is Viola Desmond…? other than the newest face on Canada’s ten-dollar bill. She is best known for her courage in refusing to leave the whites-only section of Nova Scotia’s Roseland cinema in 1946, a decision that made history, but she was also a feminist and beauty product icon. What was the fire within this successful black Canadian businesswoman that gave her the courage and confidence to stand up to systemic racial injustices in Canada?

BENEATH SPRINGHILL:

The Maurice Ruddick Story

Arts Club On Tour | by Beau Dixon

January 23 – 27, 2024 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

Trapped. 4,000 feet underground. With no food, little air, and even less hope of survival. Remarkably and against all odds, the indomitable spirit and song of coal miner Maurice Ruddick served as a lifeline for his fellow miners over nine unimaginable days. Beneath Springhill is the inspiring true story of the African-Canadian “singing miner” that emerged from the 1958 Springhill, Nova Scotia, mining disaster.

Adults: $50 | Seniors: $42 | Students: $16 | Row A: $29

ECHOES FROM FAR AWAY CITIES

Blackout Theatre | by Amir N. Hosseini

February 13 – 17, 2024 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

Echoes from Far Away Cities explores how impunity, silence, stigma and shame keep domestic violence one of the most persistent and devastating global human rights violations today, yet it remains underreported. The idea behind this play is to find a way to show the invisible and, in doing so, share the devastating impact of trauma and domestic violence in hopes of bringing awareness to the problem. We tried to push the boundaries and present hard-to-swallow topics for our audience in a hopeful narration based on a real story.

Adults: $45 | Seniors: $38 | Students: $16

MADE IN ITALY

Arts Club On Tour | by Farren Timoteo

March 12 – 16, 2024 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

Meet Francesco Mantini, a second-generation Italian teen struggling to find his place in Jasper, Alberta. Inspired by pop culture icons Rocky Balboa and John Travolta, he reinvents himself as Frank Martin: crooner and ladies’ man. As buoyant and bubbly as a glass of prosecco, Made in Italy is a celebration of music, food, and family that’s so delightful you won’t soon “fuhgeddaboudit”.

Adults: $50 | Seniors: $42 | Students: $16 | Row A: $29

SANSEI: THE STORYTELLER

Cloudsway Dance Theatre | by Kunji Mark Ikeda

April 16 – 20, 2024 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

It may seem as though a light-hearted look at the Japanese Internment isn’t possible until you understand: “If the Japanese Internment of WWII didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be alive.” Sansei: The Storyteller uses dance, theatre, and humour to tell the story of one of Canada’s darkest decisions and how the rampant racism of past generations affected the Japanese community today. Kunji Ikeda investigates the social climates and hardships when the Ikeda family was labelled enemy aliens.

Adults: $45 | Seniors: $38 | Students: $16

HOMECOMING

Urban Ink Theatre | by Kamila Sediego

May 14 – 18, 2024 | 7:30PM + 3PM Saturday

Vicky meets her estranged adult niece for the first time and must come to terms with grudges, memories, and regrets buried deep in her family’s past. Three generations of Filipina women hop between an ocean and time, memory and dreams. Set in Canada and the Philippines, Homecoming is a visceral show with moments of magic that reach into the afterlife, exploring cultural identity, familial duty, and delicious Filipino food.

Adults: $45 | Seniors: $38 | Students: $16

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.
